Amy’s mudras

I attended a couple of webinars with Amy Weintraub recently, and I thought what she had to say about mudras was worth sharing (mudras are hand gestures that have both symbolic meaning and specific effects on the energetic body).

I’ve always enjoyed using basic mudras in my own yoga practice, but have done so more  through a trust in the tradition rather than a deep personal understanding of why they work.  Which is why I found Amy’s explanation of mudras so enlightening, and wanted to share it here with you.

Before teaching us any mudras or informing us of their benefits, Amy had us try out a few simple hand positions, and feel their effects for ourselves.

Here’s what Amy had us try:

  • Close your eyes and notice where your natural breath is landing in your body
  • Touch the tips of the index fingers together and notice where your breath is now
  • Then touch the little fingers together and notice where the breath is
  • Then touch the tips of the thumbs together and notice where the breath is located
  • Then the little fingers again
  • Then the ring fingers
  • Then the middle fingers
  • Then the index fingers again
  • And the thumbs again, still noticing the effect that this has on where the breath is landing in the body

Close your eyes and try it yourself.  I’d love for you to have your own experience with this before I tell you about mine…………..

I very clearly felt my breath deeper and lower in my body when I touched the tips of my little fingers together, and higher up when I touched the tips of the other fingers.  Amazing!

Apparently this is what the ancient yogi’s found too.  Pressing the tips of the little fingers together in various mudras directs the breath down to the lowest chakra (the root chakra), and each progressive finger directs the energy to the higher chakras.  This is the basis of the various mudras that we know and love.

When I tried this exercise, I was sitting in front of my computer practicing these mudras along with Amy’s presentation.  I was astounded to so clearly feel such a difference in the location of my breath when I pressed different fingertips together.  Once again, I am blown away by the breathtaking power of yoga (no pun intended).

Amy has a new book which is due to be released in Australia any day now (my copy on pre-order hasn’t arrived yet), and if you’re interested in finding out more about these practices, you might like to check it out.

I’ve also been working on an online course these past few months, called ‘A Daily Dose of Bliss‘ (the secret is out!), which will include a mudra or two….. and that’s I’m saying for now!

If you tried Amy’s mudra exercise, leave me a comment or send me an email….. I’d love to hear about it!

Andrea, I caught you playing at the Mullumbimby Farmer’s market a few months ago, and just loved your show. I’ve been grooving along to  ‘Earth on an Axis’ ever since.  But you have a new album coming out I hear, tell me a bit about it. It’s been two years since I recorded my first album in the UK. I am very excited to be releasing my new single ‘Daydreamer’.  This song is the first single from my up and coming album which will probably be released next year. Daydreamer was written one afternoon when I was sitting in the sunshine, birds singing in the trees and I was feeling really peaceful and happy. What’s the plan for your up and coming European tour? We have over 25 shows and radio interviews booked in the next few months. We land in the UK mid June, and head straight to perform at one of my favourite festivals which is called ‘Sunrise Celebration’. This is a solar powered/ renewable energy festival with about 15 000 festival goers! We are also heading to Scotland, France (where my Dad’s side of the family reside), Germany and Denmark. Although I lived in UK before, this is my first big three month tour, and I am so excited to be heading over to share my music! Tell me about the Pozible Daydreamer Project? The Daydreamer Project on Pozible is a crowd funding site that has been a fantastic platform for us to get the word out to our fans, friends and family to ask for some support in getting over to Europe. As you could imagine there are many costs involved in touring. We are also going to be making a grass roots documentary to inspire independent musicians on how to book, manage and promote their own tours by showing how we did it. Eventually I’d like to run workshops on this subject, as I know I would have loved to have had this information when I was emerging as an artist. In this moment, what are you grateful for? I am grateful for so many things. I wake up in the morning and often think of people and things I am blessed to have in my life (which is a lot!). I am very grateful for all the love from family and friends. I am grateful for my community, and where I live in the world. I am blessed to be able to share my music, and be living my dream! What are you inspired by? I draw inspiration from so many places. In relation to song writing, I am like a sponge and soak up people’s stories, world events, places that I travel to, and what’s happening in my own life.  I like to think of my songs as stories, and that I am a storyteller. When we share stories, we learn from each other and I am learning everyday! What are you trusting in? That is an interesting question. I can’t say that I know exactly what it is that I put my trust in. It’s almost unexplainable, and yet deeply in my own personal experience. I believe in a higher good for all beings and to wish happiness and not harm. That it what I trust in. Lovely to catch up with you Andrea.  Best of luck with your tour!

Andrea Soler & James Ross

If you’d like to connect with Andrea or check out her tour dates, visit her website. If you’d like to support her European tour, head on over to Pozible (only 17 days and $800 to go!). And….. If you’re local and would like to catch Andrea before she heads OS, she’s launching her new album at the Bush Theatre in Nimbim on Friday 1st June, and at the  Beach Hotel in Byron Bay on Sunday 3rd June at 5pm (see you there x). Ayurveda & mental health with Andrew Stenberg

Andrew at the Crystal Castle in Mullumbimby

Andrew Stenberg, one of Australia’s leading Ayurvedic practitioners, met with the Yoga and Psychology Sangha in Mullumbimby last night to talk to us about Maharishi Ayurveda and Mental Health.  He said his aim was not only to give us information, but also to have us leave happier than when we arrived.   And I think he succeeded, and not only because of the way he helped us to pronounce Ayurveda…..

imagine you saw Darth Veda from Star Wars walking down the street, but you weren’t sure if it was him, so you walk up to him and ask him……
(you get the rest right?)

Andrew described the 3 controlling principles of Ayurveda; vatapitta and kapha.  From a mental health perspective, an imbalance of vata is associated with anxiety, pitta with anger and kapha with depression.  He recommended some valuable tools for us to use for ourselves and our clients, including musicaromas and tea.  Andrew particularly recommended Rain Melody music (Gandharva Veda), which promotes calm and bliss.  I can attest to this…. this morning I played this CD on repeat, and my children and I had the most serene morning together…. it was indeed blissful!

Maharishi Ayurveda highlights the importance of a daily routine, digesting food for nourishment, adequate quality sleep and daily meditation to help us on our way to a healthier, happier life and the path to enlightenment.  Andrew described for us a daily routine that adheres to these ideals which included:

  1. Adequate and regular rest – ideally in bed by 10pm and up by 6am, as this fits with the cycles of the laws of nature
  2. Start the day with a glass of room temperature water followed by a visit to the toilet.  Then scape your tongue to remove the plaque build up from the night before.
  3. Meditate regularly
  4. Exercise regularly – at least 20 minutes of brisk walking every other day, breathing through the nose.
  5. Eat in a settled way – if we’re busy while we’re eating, blood flows to the brain instead of the stomach and digestion in inefficient, which can result in various ill effects over time.

Recommended while eating is: listening to beautiful music, uplifting conversation, silence, and/or sitting quietly for 5-10 minutes after eating to complete digestion.  Not recommended while eating is – reading, using the computer or watching TV, ‘important’ discussions, upsets or hurrying, or cold drinks or excess fluids near meals

Andrew is currently studying a further Masters degree at the Maharishi University in the US, however is in Australia for a short time, travelling, conducting workshops and seeing private clients.  Andrew can be contacted at ayuhealing@gmail.com.
