I have worked as a psychologist in a number of settings, including community health and child and adolescent mental health (Greater Southern Area Health Service), occupational rehabilitation (Health Services Australia, Rehabilitation Outcomes and HSORS) and disability services (Therapy ACT). Prior to becoming a psychologist, I worked as a support worker and therapist (Richmond Fellowship) and as a university counsellor (Charles Sturt University). I began working independently in private practice in 2008.
I completed my academic studies at the Australian National University, including a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. My research was on Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for depression and anxiety, which is an exciting evidence based therapy that integrates traditional cognitive therapy with yoga and mindfulness meditation.
In addition to the standard Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy training, I'm also trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, iRest Yoga Nidra™ and Life Force Yoga (currently undergoing training).
I am committed to ongoing professional training and development. I regularly attend peer supervision meetings with local psychologists, I'm a member of the local Mental Health Professionals Network, and I continue to update my skills with training and workshops. I also try to practice what I preach, and regularly take time out for myself and my family. I feel very lucky to be doing work that I love, and I'm constantly inspired by my clients and students.
In 2001 I began practicing yoga and not long after I began integrating yoga sequences into the contemporary dance classes I was teaching at the time. In 2005 I began my formal yoga training with an Ashtanga Yoga apprenticeship at the London School of Yoga, followed by extensive training in Ashtanga yoga, classical yoga, yoga therapy, pre & post natal yoga and children's yoga in India (Viswanatha at the Foundation of Pathanjala Yoga Kendra, Jayakumar at the Pranava Yogadhama and BNS Iyengar at the Sri Patanjala Yogashala), Singapore (David Swenson), England (Yoga Bugs and Yoga'd Up) and Australia (Ana Davis, Simon Borg-Olivier and the Australian Yoga Academy). My husband and I ran Jivana Yoga in Canberra, introducing Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga to the capital, until moving to the Byron Shire.
I have a regular personal yoga practice, and regularly attend yoga and meditation classes with some wonderful teachers in the shire. I keep up to date with scientific research in the area of yoga, mindfulness and mental health (this is a relatively new and blossoming field), and integrate this information into my classes. I also organise a yoga psychology sangha for local mental health professionals.
I have been taking photographs as long as I can remember, starting with cameras handed down to me as a child and progressing to digital in the last decade. I studied a Bachelor of Design (Photography) for awhile, but dropped out as I realised pretty quickly that I wasn't at all moved by commercial photography. I have been finding my own way ever since. Taking and sharing photographs makes my heart sing!
